Circular economy from big bag to big bag

Starlinger

In cooperation with the big bag manufacturers Louis Blockx NV, Arendonk/Belgium, and LC Packaging GmbH, Rheine/Germany, the producer of machinery and complete lines for woven plastic bag production Starlinger & Co. Ges.m.b.H., Vienna/Austria, is testing closed-loop recycling management for so-called big bags or FIBCs. The concept called Circular Packaging, in which big bags become big bags again, has been nominated for the Plastic Recycling Award Europe 2020.

Big bags are a light packaging type for free-flowing bulk materials. They are mainly made of polypropylene (PP) and, due to their low weight, have a significantly better CO2 balance than rigid containers. Although their size and weight make them very suitable for recycling, 75% of all big bags are intended for single use. The associated disposal on landfill sites or by means of incineration causes severe environmental damage with high CO2 pollution.
Circular Packaging thus represents a holistic approach that encompasses various phases of the big bag life cycle such as production, use, return, washing process and recycling.
The official presentation of the Plastic Recycling Award Europe 2020 will take place during the Plastics Recycling Show Europe on March 26, 2020 in Amsterdam/Netherlands.
